Leading MA business association recognizes FirstLight’s clean energy portfolio, commitment to social responsibility

FirstLight Power, a leading clean power producer and energy storage company, has been named by Associated Industries of Massachusetts as a 2020 winner of the AIM Sustainability Award.

The AIM award, issued annually since 2016, recognizes excellence in environmental stewardship, promotion of social well-being and contributions to economic prosperity.

“These companies set the standard for sustainably managing their financial, social and environmental resources in a manner that ensures responsible, long-term success,” said AIM President and Chief Executive Officer John R. Regan.

In selecting FirstLight, AIM noted that the company operates “the largest clean energy generation portfolio in New England today,” including its Northfield Mountain pumped-hydro storage facility, battery storage at Brandeis University and the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, and hydroelectric and solar generation in Western Massachusetts. “FirstLight maintains a strong commitment to social responsibility” and support for “local environmental, educational, and public safety organizations,’’ AIM stated.

FirstLight CEO Alicia Barton said: “On behalf of all my colleagues at FirstLight, I wanted to express how honored we are to receive this award from Massachusetts’ largest and most influential business association. In all of our operations, we are committed to sustainability, supporting the Commonwealth in reaching its ambitious goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, and addressing the existential threat of climate change.’’

Barton added: “I want also to congratulate each of the four other winners of the AIM Sustainability Award this year:Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Kadant Inc., R.H. White Companies, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals. It’s an honor for FirstLight to be recognized alongside such a prestigious and diverse group of companies also committed to being sustainability leaders in their industry sectors.’’

FirstLight and the other award recipients be honored during the AIM virtual Sustainability Roundtable from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16. AIM initiated the Sustainability Roundtable in 2011 to provide employers the opportunity to exchange sustainability best practices and hear from experts in the field.
