They’re two of New England’s most beautiful, rustic, riverfront campgrounds for tent camping–and they’re both less than 90 miles from Boston, Hartford, or Providence. Wednesday, April 10, was opening day to make reservations to camp starting on Memorial Day Weekend for the rustic Barton Cove in Gill, Massachusetts, and Munn’s Ferry campground—which is accessible only by kayak or boat–up the Connecticut River in Northfield. Both campsites are managed by FirstLight Power Resources, the local renewable/hydro energy company.

Barton Cove, winner of Yankee Magazine’s “Best Tent Camping” award, offers bathrooms, showers, a group camping site, and a day-use picnic area. Auto access is allowed only for unloading and loading, keeping the site quiet and peaceful. Two sites for pop-up or class C campers not requiring utility hookups are also available. For a one-of-a-kind camping experience, try Munn’s Ferry, accessible only by water from one of the several boat launches nearby. Munn’s Ferry is a truly rustic location (without potable water–plan on supplying your own) but does offer an Adirondack shelter option. Reservations at Barton Cove are available until Labor Day, Munn’s Ferry until Columbus Day.
