Shad and salmon in the 410-mile
Connecticut river get a vital lift as they
migrate upstream. A series of fishways at dam
sites along the river provides passage over
the dams.
At the Holyoke dam, fish actually are
lifted with an elevator in a system developed
in the 1950's.
At other dams, different systems are used.
Each location presents unique engineering
problems.
